Snapping
Out of Old Beliefs The greatest
blocks to living the life of your dreams are the old, negative belief
patterns that sabotage your progress. Often times it's hard to even
discover your "negative mantras" as they reside in the
unconscious below the level of conscious awareness. In order to
"snap out" of your old beliefs you have to become aware of
what they are. If you hear an inner voice whose vocabulary is full of
"shoulds, ought-to's and can'ts," you can be pretty sure that
you're dealing with old beliefs. One technique that
Mark Victor Hansen writes about in his book, The One-Minute
Millionaire, is particularly good for "snapping out" of old
beliefs. He suggests putting a large, thick rubber band around your
wrist. "Every time you catch yourself thinking a negative or
counterproductive thought, you snap the rubber band." Marc says
that the pain causes a "pattern interupt" to the old thought
or belief. He recommends wearing the band 24/7 for thirty days as a way
to quickly, safely and satisfyingly change your behavior. If you're like me
and have a low pain threshold you might have to resort to just being
super mindful about your negative self-talk. When a negative thought
comes up for me I say to my inner voice: "Thank-you for
sharing.... I'm so grateful that I'm able to hear this core imprinting
that's coming from my past. I now choose to....(substitute new thought
or belief)." Whatever method you choose, the first step is to
become aware of the old belief. Anything you are aware of you have the
power to change. Remember too, that the point is to try and not resist
or judge the thought that's coming up.
Whatever we resist, persists so it's better to engage your
curiosity in looking at what you've just discovered. In the larger
scheme of things your negative thoughts or beliefs have no greater
meaning than the meaning you give them. So just acknowledge the
thought, bless it for its message and then send it on its way! Next
thought!
