Life Coaching:
Bringing Forth Your Highest
Potential
©
2007 James Jarvis, M.A.
The profession of life coaching has
been around for about 15 years now but for most people it is still a
new concept. Originally implemented as a method for helping executives
achieve their goals and stay focused, life coaching has changed and
evolved so that it is now being used by people in all walks of life. As
the field evolves you can now find a life coach that will support you
in developing new skills, finding a new career, building more
satisfying relationships, etc.
Life coaching appeals to people who
aren't satisfied with just a job but want to discover more meaningful
work or a life focus that transcends the grind of working for a living.
Life coaching is not necessarily about finding a specific job but more
to do with discovering your natural contribution and service (dharma)
in the world. The word "dharma" in ancient Sanskrit means:
"living according to natural law." On a deeper level this means
that each of us is here for a specific purpose and that it is our
challenge and duty is to discover what that purpose or dharma is.
For some that may mean breaking through
any blocks that prevent you from making a greater impact in the world.
For others it may mean reorienting or downsizing your life towards a
more inward focused and meaningful direction. Regardless of the
direction you take, the most important thing to remember is that you
have a mission that is unique to you and that is naturally un-folding.
The challenge is to discover what the grand synthesis of your unique
gifts, interests, talents and abilities is all pointing to.
Many of my life coaching clients are not
aware of their unique contribution to others because their natural
gifts and abilities are transparent or not seen by themselves. In other
words, this means that your natural dharma or mission has much less to
do with what you do than with who you are. When you are doing what you
love, there is a quality of "being" present that adds extra value
and depth to your work. You may not notice this but others will! The
challenge is to discover what these intangible qualities are and find
ways of doing more of it in your life!
When I ask my clients how much of their
job they really enjoy they usually report that they derive satisfaction
from about 10-30 per cent of what they do in their work. My job, as a
life coach, is to help them discover and clarify what that 10-30 per
cent is and help them find ways of doing more of it either in their
present job or a new one. What many of my coaching clients have found
is that once they are clear about their unique gifts they tend to enjoy
their present jobs more because they naturally create opportunities to
do what they love.
On the other hand, if the opportunities
are not present in their current job to do what they love, then they
have the clarity, insight and courage to move on so they can create
situations that really value their contribution and bring out their
highest potential!
