The Moon in Vedic Astrology
©
2008 James Jarvis, M.A.
When someone in India
asks you what sign you are, they’re usually not speaking about your Sun
sign, but rather your moon sign! In fact, a Vedic astrologer or
“Jyotisha” in India can tell what moon sign natives are born under
often from their first name alone! In Vedic astrology the zodiac is
divided into 27 different moon nakshatras or constellations instead of
the 12 divisions we have in western astrology. Since each nakshatra is
ruled by a different deity (god or goddess) many parents in India name
their children after the deity associated with their child’s moon sign!
For example, Anuradha
Pal, a world re-known female tabla player was born with her moon in
Anuradha, which is situated in the sign of Scorpio. Having risen to the
top of her field in a very male-dominated profession required the
determination of her very strong moon in the constellation of Anuradha.
Another example of Anuradha moon is Sadaam Husein who demonstrated the
same determination, drive and stubborness in a more controlling and
dominating way.
In Vedic Astrology,
the moon is also very important in determining compatibility between
potential marriage partners. There is a very elaborate method that’s
called the “kuta” system which analyses the “points of agreement”
between two people based on temperament, suitability for parenthood,
sexual compatibility (size does matter!), and spiritual development.
Since many marriages are pre-arranged, parents always consult their
family astrologer before agreeing to a match. Maybe you should too!
The Vedic moon also
speaks to the deeper level of mind that is the source of emotions. In
the Hindu and Buddhist traditions it is seen that emotional suffering
is caused by the mental thoughts that produce negative emotion or
feelings. Understanding your moon constellation, the house placement,
the house the moon rules, and the aspects formed with the moon all help
you understand your deeper emotional make-up on psychological and
spiritual levels. Through the use of remedial mantras and gemstones,
you can also successfully heal emotional issues stemming from this or
past lifetimes.
